Environment before shippingFeed: 6% fat diet (Purina 5K52).Water: Adjusted with hydrochloric acid to pH 2.8-3.1 and supplemented with menadione sodium bisulfite (final concentration 0.4 milligram/milliliter) to compensate for potential decrease in vitamin K activity upon autoclaving; water supplied in pinhole type bottles (Thoren Caging Systems, Inc. Hazelton, PA). Housing: Thoren cages; Thoren Maxi Miser #3 cages used for some strains as part of a PIV (pressurized individually ventilated) system. Bedding: Steam autoclaved white pine shavings. Photoperiod: 14 h light (generally on 0430 h) 10 h dark. Temperature: 18 - 24C Relative humidity: ~50% Acclimation and testing periodsFeed: Irradiated LabDiet 5015Water: Reverse Osmosis (RO) water. Bedding: Irradiated Alpha-dri bedding (Shepherd Specialty Papers, Inc.) Caging/ventilation: The animals were housed in shoebox type cages approved by the animal care and use committee and stacked on animal racks to provide adequate ventilation. Photoperiod: 12 h diurnal cycle, lights on 0700 - 1900 h. Health Status Report: The animals were examined by a veterinarian and found to be in good health. The facility was routinely monitored for mouse parvovirus (MPV), mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), minute virus of mice (MVM), mouse poliovirus (GDIIV), mouse rotavirus (EDIM), Sendai (paramyxovirus), pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), ectoparasites and endoparasites. |
