The effects of diet and sex on DO mice were investigated. DO mice of both sexes were fed either a regular chow diet or a high fat, high sucrose (HFHS, 45% fat, 40% carbohydrate, and 15% protein) diet. Various physiological traits were measured throughout the study, such as effects on body/organ weight, blood glucose levels, urinalysis and clinical chemistry. Genotypes are available at DODB (search for Svenson).

Experimental groups in this study:
• Chow     • High fat high sucrose diet (HFHS)

Procedures conducted:
• body weight  Body weight from 3-30 wks of age. Principal components.
• metabolic panel  Clinical chemistry at 8 and 19 wks of age. 4h fast. Clinical chemistry at 17 wks of age. No fast.
• lipid profile  Cholesterol, fatty acids, triglyceride at 8 and 19 wks of age. 4h fast.
• complete blood count  Hematology at 10 and 22 wks of age.
• urinalysis  Glucose, creatinine, microalbumin, albumin-creatinine ratio at 11 and 20 wks of age.
• body size and weight  Body length at 12 and 21 wks of age.
• DXA  Body mass, lean mass, fat mass, bone mineral density at 12 and 21 wks of age.
• ECG  Heart rate and wave intervals at 13 wks. Conscious.
• MRI  Lean and fat tissue mass, water mass at 16 wks of age.
• glucose tolerance  0-180 min after 20% glucose i.p. at 23-24 wks of age. 15h fast.
• organ weights  Heart, kidney, spleen at 26-30 wks.
