Purpose:
To
characterize BALB/cJ male and female mice fed a 6% fat diet (LabDiet® 5K52) between the ages of 3 and 15 weeks.Per-animal data are available in the download file.
Methods
One hundred sixty male and one hundred sixty female mice were obtained at weaning (birthdate +/- 3 days) from two barrier levels (standard and maximum) from both Bar Harbor and Sacramento facilities of The Jackson Laboratory, and weighed weekly until the oldest age held in inventory. The mice were maintained on a diet containing 6% fat (LabDiet® 5K52 formulation).
At 8 and 16 weeks cohorts of at least 20 mice were weighed and body composition was analyzed using a Lunar PIXImus DEXA scanner. Calculations of body composition excluded the head. Cardiac blood was collected under isoflurane anesthesia and divided for hematology (using a Siemens Advia 2120 or Drew Scientific Hemavet 950 FS analyzer) or serum biochemistry (Beckman AU680 analyzer). Single-cell suspensions were also analyzed by flow cytometry following a protocol found here.
